What Are Vitreous Floaters?

Vitreous floaters are caused by changes in the vitreous gel, a gel-like substance known as the vitreous humour that fills the eye.

As it ages, it can shrink or clump, creating vitreous opacities that cast shadows on the retina. In most cases, this often occurs during a posterior vitreous detachment, the most common cause of floaters.

Symptoms and When to Be Concerned

Floaters may appear as dots, dark spots, squiggly lines, or cobwebs, especially noticeable against a white wall or bright light

. A sudden onset of new floaters, flashes of light, or floaters and flashes together can indicate retinal tears or retinal detachment and require an urgent eye exam by an eye specialist or ophthalmologist.

Whether eye floaters develop suddenly or over time, in the vast majority of cases, it is important to get help as soon as they start impacting your vision.

Diagnosis and Eye Examination

An eye doctor will carry out a comprehensive eye exam to assess the:

  • Vitreous
  • Retina
  • Optic nerve
  • Overall eye health.

Additional tests may be required to rule out medical conditions such as inflammation, uveitis, bleeding, or high blood pressure that can increase risk factors.

Vitreous Floaters Treatment Options

Treatment options depend on symptoms and severity.

  • Mild floaters or the occasional floater often require no treatment, as the brain adapts over time.
  • Persistent floaters may be treated with YAG laser vitreolysis, which uses laser energy to break up floaters.
  • In rare cases, vitrectomy surgery may be recommended to remove the vitreous gel entirely.

Our expert eye specialists will determine the severity of your condition, and the correct vitreous floaters treatment for you.

Risks, Recovery and Follow-Up

Most people tolerate treatment for vitreous floaters well, but possible complications can occur, depending on the procedure and include inflammation or retinal issues. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled to ensure the floaters have been effectively treated and your vision remains stable. Your eye care specialist will discuss risks, benefits, and a personalised treatment plan during your initial appointment.
