How to spot the symptoms of Cataracts
What are Cataracts?
A cataract is a clouding that develops in the lens of the eye, varying in severity from slight to complete opacity and obstructing the passage of light. It is the most common cause of blindness in the world and is conventionally treated with surgery. Visual loss occurs because opacification of the lens obstructs light from passing and being focused on to the retina at the back of the eye.
Often patients will have problems appreciating colours and changes in contrast, difficulty with driving, reading and recognising faces, and problems coping with glare from bright lights.
What are the symptoms of Cataracts?
Signs and symptoms of cataracts include:
- Clouded, blurred or dim vision
- Increasing difficulty with vision at night
- Sensitivity to light and glare
- Need for brighter light for reading and other activities
- Seeing “halos” around lights
- Frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescription
- Fading or yellowing of colours
- Double vision in a single eye
Most cataracts develop slowly and don’t disturb your eyesight early on. Initially, when your vision starts to become cloudy, the cataract may only affect a small part of the eye’s lens making any vision loss difficult to notice. As the size of the cataract increases, it becomes more opaque and distorts the light passing through the lens. This may lead to more symptoms arising, indicating that it may be time to consult a vision correction specialist.
When should I see a vision correction specialist?
We encourage you to make an appointment for an eye exam at any time you notice any changes in your vision, whether it is a cataract, another condition or turns out to be nothing at all. If you develop sudden vision changes such as those mentioned in the symptoms above, or something more severe like double vision, light flashes or sudden eye pain, you need to see your doctor or an eye specialist as soon as possible.
