Q&A Series: Is Laser Eye Surgery right for me?

28th May 2014

In a new series of blog posts, we will be answering vital questions often asked by our patients about the various aspects of laser eye surgery. In this post, we aim to provide answers on the suitability of laser eye surgery.

Why would I need laser eye surgery?

If you are looking to reduce your dependence on glasses or contact lenses and improve your quality of life.

What refractive errors can be corrected by laser eye surgery?

Short sightedness (myopia), long sightedness (hyperopia) and astigmatism.

Is laser eye surgery suitable for high prescriptions?

Yes, patients with high prescriptions can be suitable for laser eye surgery providing there is enough corneal tissue, as the laser works to reshape the cornea to correct the prescription. Different lasers can treat different levels of prescription – suitability can be determined at consultation.

I have been refused laser eye surgery in the past owing to the strength of my prescription. Have techniques moved on?

Yes they have. Our consultation includes a number of tests which will determine both your suitability for treatment and help you decide on which is best suited to your personal needs and expectations.

How do I know if I am suitable for laser eye surgery?

A thorough assessment by a LaserVision consultant will be able to determine if you are suitable for laser vision correction.

Are there other treatments available if I’m not a laser surgery candidate?

You may be suitable for Phakic ICL (Implantable contact lens) surgery or Refractive Lens Exchange surgery. Patients looking to correct their near vision may also be suitable for KAMRA™ Inlay surgery.

Book a consultation with LaserVision at your nearest hospital-based centre for a thorough suitability assessment.
