Q&A series: What happens on the day of my Laser Eye Surgery?

consultant_care

The third in our latest Q&A series of blog posts, here we shall be answering vital questions often asked by our patients about what will happen on the day of treatment.

On the day of your laser eye surgery at LaserVision, you will be cared for every step of the way by a team led by your Consultant, whom you met at your first consultation.

Can I ask my surgeon questions on the day of my laser eye surgery?

There will be plenty of time allocated for you to ask any questions that you may have before the surgery itself. The procedure will be carried out by a highly qualified clinical team who will ensure that the whole day is as relaxed as possible.

Can I wear make-up?

On the day of treatment you should not wear any make up at all, as this may affect the accuracy of the laser. Prior to treatment, the eye area will be cleaned by nursing staff to ensure the area is cleaned effectively.

How long does laser eye surgery take?

Laser eye surgery procedures including LASIK, LASEK and SupraLASE™ will take between 10 and 20 minutes, depending on the procedure performed. The laser treatment, including immediate post-treatment time, will be around 2 hours.

Are both eyes treated at the same time?

LASIK and LASEK is performed bilaterally simultaneously in approximately 95% of the patients we treat (i.e. both eyes same day). The decision always rests with the patient however after considering the pros and cons.

What happens after treatment?

Once treatment has been performed, you will be taken to a recovery area or to your own personal room.

We highly recommend that you bring a friend or relative to accompany you for the day and to ensure you rest as much as possible on the journey home and afterwards. That same evening, we recommend not making any plans to ensure you rest as much as possible and sleep well. We would also recommend you bring a pair of sunglasses to help protect your eyes as much as possible on your journey home.

When can I return to work after treatment?

We would not recommend you returning to work on the day of treatment. Many return to work two days later but this will depend on the type of treatment you have and type of work you do.

When will I be discharged?

Depending on your treatment, there are around 5-6 recommended aftercare appointments. On average this will take around four months. When you are discharged from our care, you will be sent a discharge summary. You need to keep for in a safe place as it may be required in the future. When we have discharged you we will write to your doctor (GP).

Still have a question in mind about the treatment day itself? Please call us on 03 333 555 777.

Dr Jayaswal has been amazing and changed my life. He made me feel so comfortable and relaxed in his care at the first meet, to remembering me with a personalised greeting, calmly explaining the procedure and reassuring me all the way through the surgery. I couldn’t recommend him enough for Lasik eye surgery - I now have perfect vision, a real dream come true! Thank you so much!

I had lens replacement surgery. After being both short sighted and long sighted for decades I can now see near and far without glasses or contact lens. It really is amazing. The care was great and so far the recovery has been easy.

Amazing service from start to finish, I had LASIK surgery in August this year after years of consideration I finally took the plunge and went for the surgery with Mr Tappin. Mr Mike Tappin and his team were brilliant from the consultation right through to the surgery and aftercare. Mr Tappin and his team were very reassuring throughout the surgery and put me at ease every step of the way. If you are thinking about having laser eye treatment or at the start of your journey with it, I would highly recommend seeing Mr Tappin and his team!
