How to prepare for Cataract Surgery
Cataract surgery is one of the oldest, most refined treatments in the world. Over the last 60 years cataract surgery has evolved more than any other operation. But before treatment, you’ll need to prepare for cataract surgery, which will ensure the best treatment and recovery process! How to Prepare for Cataract Surgery
In preparation for cataract surgery there are a few steps you may be required to take to help to ensure your eye surgery procedure runs smoothly.
Medical History
Your doctor will require you to provide a detailed breakdown of your medical history. This information allows doctors to identify if any of your medication may cause issues during surgery; so you know whether you should or should not temporarily stop taking it prior to treatment.

Eye Measurements
A week prior to your cataract surgery a pain-free test will be taken to measure the size and shape of your eye. This determines the right size lens for your individual eye shape.
There are several types of Intra-Ocular Lenses (IOCLs) available, each having their own strength and purpose. Your choice of lens is crucial and will have a major influence on the outcome of surgery.

Food and Drink Consumption
During your consultation, your doctor may request that you do not eat or drink for 12 hours prior in preparation for cataract surgery.
Antibiotic Eye Drops
Antibiotic eyedrops may be prescribed to you 1-2 days before cataract surgery to help prepare your eyes for treatment.

Post Cataract Surgery Preparation
The recovery process is relatively quick, taking around 48 hours for your dilated pupils to return to their normal size. You will need to arrange a lift home after your eye surgery as you will not be able to drive. We recommend arranging help for around the house as doctors may advise minimal activity for at least two days post-surgery.
Do not be alarmed if you experience some unusual light phenomena early on – this is common and often settles within a few days.
Results may not be noticed immediately. However, 1-week post cataract treatment you will start to see a significant improvement in your vision. If glasses are still required (depending on your chosen lens) they can be prescribed at any point after the second week of recovery, to ensure that your prescription is accurate.
