LaserVision

Supplier name: Prema / Laser Vision Ltd
Publication date: May 2025

Laser Vision Ltd is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions, the planned actions highlighted below will help us to achieve this target by 2050 at the latest.

This document presents the estimated annual carbon footprint for a 10,000 square foot ophthalmic clinic comprising a daycase theatre, laser suite, 15 WTE staff, LED lighting throughout, and a 40,000 kWh/year solar system. Emissions are categorised under Scope 2 (indirect energy) and Scope 3 (indirect other) according to the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol.

Baseline Emissions Footprint

Baseline Year: 01/01/2025 – 31/12/2025

Scope 1 – Direct Emissions

Category Details / Assumptions Estimate (tCO2e/year)
Gas heating Estimated 20,000 kWh/year from on-site boiler 3.7

Scope 2 – Indirect Emissions from Energy

Category Details / Assumptions Estimate (tCO2e/year)
Electricity (net of solar) 140,000 kWh/year – 40,000 kWh solar offset 20 – 25
Theatre & laser suite energy uplift Extra energy due to HVAC and equipment 8 – 10

Scope 3 – Indirect Emissions (Other)

**Total Estimated Emissions:** ~155,000 – 191,000 kg CO2e/year (149–185.5 tonnes CO2e/year).
Category Details / Assumptions Estimate (tCO2e/year)
Staff commuting 15 staff × 5 days/week × 12 mi roundtrip 22 – 28
Patient travel 25 patients/day × 250 days/year × 6 miles 65 – 75
Clinical waste ~2 tonnes/year incinerated 3 – 4
Procurement & consumables Medical goods, lenses, PPE, kits 35 – 45
Water, waste & ops Sterilisation, cleaning, general waste 1,5 – 2
Business travel CPD, outreach, training 1 – 2

Solar Offset (Scope 2 Reduction)

The clinic’s solar array generates 40,000 kWh/year, offsetting approximately 8,000 kg CO2e annually. This reduction has been accounted for in the Scope 2 emissions estimate.

Net-Zero Emissions Trajectory (Target: 2050)

The clinic aims to reduce emissions from a baseline of approximately 173 tonnes to net zero by 2050:

Year Target Emissions (tCO2e)
2025 173
2030 138
2035 104
2040 69
2045 35
2050 0

This chart illustrates the clinic’s planned linear reduction in carbon emissions from 2025 to 2050.

Actions to achieve Net Zero

  • Allowing staff to work from home unless necessary for them to be in the office and encouraging the use of video conferencing where possible, to reduce the need for travel.
  • Encouraging staff to utilise eco-friendly forms of transport for commutes to the office.
  • Encouraging car sharing when possible.
  • Development of online webinars and live link sessions for teaching and education to optometrists, thereby reducing the need to travel to site.
  • ESG strategy and vision to be developed for the business which includes the development of sustainability partners.
  • Building management systems have been upgraded to reduce energy usage.
  • All single-use plastic items are removed from the stationery contract.
  • Reduction in printing and paper use with digital patient notes.
  • Reduction in printing and paper usage when communicating with patients and other key stakeholders – priority should be given to email and telephone contact.
  • Continuously work to collect the highest quality, primary data on our emissions to aid in reduction and progress measurement.
  • Work to switch to 100% renewable energy.
  • Continue to educate our people to reduce their carbon impact both in and outside of work.
  • Transparently report on our environmental metrics both internally and externally.
