Laser Vision

Laser Floater TreatmentEye floaters can cause a scare if you do not truly understand what they are.

Although they are deemed harmless in most cases, they can be obstructive and bothersome for some.

For patients who have experienced eye floaters that interfere with daily vision, laser floater treatment with LaserVision may provide an effective solution.

Eye floaters often develop as the vitreous gel, a jelly-like substance inside the vitreous cavity, changes over time or during posterior vitreous detachment (PVD).

As scary as that sounds, it is important to remember that it is a natural occurrence with age, and is sometimes seen as dark specks or squiggly lines.

If you need treatment to reduce the effect of or eliminate eye floaters, the non-invasive, pain-free YAG laser vitreolysis floater treatment offered at our state-of-the-art Laser Vision clinics is a safe and trusted procedure.

What Is YAG Laser Vitreolysis?

YAG vitreolysis treatment is a specialised laser treatment that targets vitreous opacities inside the vitreous humour. The procedure itself is quite straightforward, with only mild discomfort expected by patients.

During the procedure, laser light delivered in short bursts of laser energy breaks the floater’s collagen into smaller fragments. What this means is that the eye floaters turn into tiny bubbles which dissolve quickly in the vitreous gel.

By undergoing the YAG laser vitreolysis treatment and following the after-care procedures, you will likely notice a significant improvement in your vision immediately, making everything feel worthwhile.

What Happens During the Treatment?

As with any medical or optical treatment session, the procedure begins with a consultation.

During this consultation, our doctors need to complete some optical tests. The reason for this is to determine whether your eye floaters are a serious concern.

Once we confirm the treatment, our experienced specialist will need to administer some anaesthetic eye drops to numb the eye and ensure comfort.

During the YAG laser vitreolysis treatment itself, a special contact lens is placed on the eye to help focus the laser light precisely.

Our doctor then applies laser energy to the floaters located safely away from the retina.

Although this outpatient procedure may sound complicated, it usually takes one treatment session.

Do note that some patients may require two treatment sessions depending on how many microscopic floaters are located close to the centre of vision.

Recovery and Aftercare

As the YAG laser vitreolysis treatment at Laser Vision is a non-invasive, pain-free treatment, patients can usually return home shortly after.

Do be aware that you may experience:

  • Temporarily blurred vision, however, they aren’t expected to last long.
  • Mild discomfort or light sensitivity for a short time.

Our after care team can help with eye drops and simple aftercare instructions to help support your recovery.

Most patients notice that within days, all temporary blurred vision or other factors impacting visual quality no longer exist, leaving behind much improved sight.

Are There Other Treatment Options for Floaters?

If the visual disturbance caused by eye floaters persist, or are significantly affecting your daily life, another option is vitrectomy surgery (or pars plana vitrectomy). This surgical vitrectomy removes the vitreous gel and replaces it with a clear solution.

At Laser Vision, we want to express that YAG laser treatment is always our first choice due to being a pain-free procedure that can aid the functional improvement of your vision.

However, if tests show the need for something more intrusive and drastic, then vitrectomy surgery is an alternative.

When Should I Consider Floater Treatment?

The answer to this question is very simple!

If at any point you notice a sudden increase in bothersome floaters, flashes, or a significant visual disturbance, an eye examination is essential.

The examination helps rule out serious conditions such as retinal tears or detachment, which will be a sigh of huge relief.

Once the seriousness of your condition is determined, it’s a case of personal choice regarding your own vision.

Because YAG laser vitreolysis offers a safe and effective treatment that restores vision clarity, most patients we treat at Laser Vision immediately jump at the chance to undergo this laser floater treatment.
