PTK Eye Surgery Hampshire

What is PTK eye surgery?

Phototherapeutic Keratectomy (PTK) is a specialist form of laser eye surgery that removes damaged corneal tissue from the surface of the eye. It is different to laser vision correction surgery, which primarily treats refractive errors; PTK is used to treat specific corneal conditions that affect comfort and vision.

What conditions can PTK treat?

PTK is commonly recommended for patients diagnosed with:

  • Recurrent corneal erosion syndrome
  • Corneal haze
  • Corneal scars
  • Surface irregularities
  • Certain inherited corneal conditions

These conditions can cause pain, blurry vision and discomfort that interfere with everyday life, so you need to have it treated as soon as possible in order to avoid further complications, infection, or complete loss of vision.

Is PTK right for me?

When you come to our clinic for your consultation, our experienced surgeons will carry out a detailed assessment of your eye condition and discuss your symptoms, medical history and treatment goals.

What we are trying to do is determine whether or not PTK is the right choice for you.

PTK may be suitable if:

  • Eye drops have not successfully controlled your symptoms.
  • You experience repeated painful corneal erosions.
  • Your optician has referred you for specialist treatment.
  • Your corneal condition affects your vision or quality of life.

If PTK is not the most suitable option, we may discuss alternative procedures such as LASIK, lens surgery, cataract surgery or other forms of vision correction. Our aim is to provide you with the best chance to improve your vision.

What happens during treatment?

When it comes to eye surgery, patients will immediately feel stressed. However, PTK surgery is relatively quick and painless, so you can feel somewhat more relaxed.

The treatment takes around 5 minutes per eye and is performed using numbing eye drops to keep you comfortable throughout the procedure.

During treatment:

  • The surface layer of the cornea is carefully prepared.
  • The laser precisely removes damaged corneal tissue.
  • A protective contact lens may be placed over the eye while it heals.

Most patients experience only mild discomfort following surgery, but we do advise around 3 days of downtime to prevent any complications.

During recovery, you may experience:

  • Mild discomfort
  • Temporary blurry vision
  • Light sensitivity
  • The need for regular eye drops

Our team will explain exactly what to expect and provide detailed aftercare instructions to support the best possible outcome.
