Mr Mike Tappin is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon specialising in corneal disease, cataract surgery, and laser and refractive surgery. He trained at St Mary’s Medical School, London, before specialising in ophthalmology and undertaking advanced training in corneal, laser and refractive surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital and the Charles Gairdner Eye Institute in Perth, Australia.
A former corneal service lead at the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford, Mr Tappin has extensive experience in managing complex corneal conditions and performing advanced corneal surgery. His approach combines specialist expertise with careful assessment and treatment tailored to each patient’s visual needs.
A major highlight of his career has been his pioneering contribution to endothelial transplantation, which replaces the delicate inner cell layer of the cornea. He helped develop the technique now known as Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) and was the first surgeon in the UK to perform it in 2005.
Mr Tappin’s clinical practice includes the Royal Surrey County Hospital, alongside private clinics at Nuffield Health Woking Hospital, Nuffield Health Guildford Hospital and Circle Health Group’s Mount Alvernia Hospital in Guildford. He is a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists.
