Ms Nishani Amerasinghe

Ms Nishani Amerasinghe is a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon at University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust, specialising in glaucoma and cataract surgery. With more than 20 years of surgical experience and thousands of procedures, she has extensive expertise in complex cataract surgery and the medical, laser, and surgical management of glaucoma.

Her practice encompasses selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT), trabeculectomy, glaucoma tube surgery and minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS). She tailors treatment to each patient’s condition and visual needs, drawing on a comprehensive range of techniques.

Ms Amerasinghe graduated from Imperial College School of Medicine at St Mary’s, London, in 1998. She completed her ophthalmology training on the Wessex rotation, including advanced glaucoma training at Southampton and Portsmouth hospitals. She subsequently undertook two further years of specialist training through a Clinical Glaucoma Research Fellowship at Singapore National Eye Centre and a Clinical Glaucoma Fellowship at Moorfields Eye Hospital, London.

Her leadership as President of the UK & Ireland Glaucoma Society reflects her commitment to advancing glaucoma care, encouraging research and supporting the next generation of specialists. She promotes collaboration and knowledge exchange, with a focus on improving care for people affected by glaucoma.

Research is integral toher work. Her projects have included a major study into the heritability of primary angle-closure glaucoma, undertaken jointly with Singapore National Eye Centre and the Institute of Ophthalmology at University College London. She authored the 2023 BMJ Best Practice resource on primary open-angle glaucoma and is principal investigator for a multicentre study examining real-world approaches to open-angle glaucoma management.

A committed teacher, Ms Amerasinghe trains ophthalmologists and allied healthcare professionals locally and internationally. Her teaching has included the West African College of Surgeons/Moorfields Trabeculectomy Course in Ghana and the Alcon Basic Glaucoma Surgical Course in Barcelona. She has received academic scholarships and prizes, published widely in peer-reviewed journals, and regularly reviews for leading ophthalmology publications.

Ms Amerasinghe is frequently invited to speak at national and international meetings, particularly on angle-closure glaucoma and glaucoma surgery. She is listed on the General Medical Council’s Specialist Register for Ophthalmology.

Beyond her clinical work, she supports public awareness of glaucoma. In 2023, she completed the Everest in the Alps endurance challenge to raise funds and awareness, and she has contributed to eye health coverage through outlets including Sky News, ITV, BBC Radio and the Mail on Sunday.
