Celebrating 200 years since the opening of Manchester Royal Eye Hospital

In 2014, we will celebrate 200 years since the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital was founded and there will be a programme of events and activities throughout the year.  There will also be plenty of opportunity for you to get involved, whether attending an event or sharing your memories and experiences with us.

We want to ensure that our bicentenary doesn’t pass by without the recognition it deserves; celebrating the past but more importantly, noting our achievements and looking forward to our future together with the recently opened LaserVision clinic at the hospital.

The decision that brought Manchester Royal Eye Hospital into being was taken at the Bridgewater Arms in the centre of the city, on 21st October 1814. Recent increased interest in the blind and eyecare in general led one William James Wilson to start the ball rolling on the now-fashionable King Street. 194 years ago, the general public were trailing to a tiny house with rent of £25 a year to have their inversion of the eyelids and strumulous inflammation attended to – footballers parading with oversized shopping bags were a world away.

On the blog we shall bring you updates on news and events celebrating our anniversary as well as how you can keep in touch with us. The official MREH 200 anniversary website is now live, click here to visit the site where you can find out even more information about the hospital’s history and celebrations for next year.
