What Is the Difference Between Private and NHS Cataract Surgery?

11th December 2020

Cataract surgery is the most common operation performed in the UK, with over 300,000 procedures performed each year. This simple surgery takes less than 30-minutes and sees immediate results with little to no pain. However, when deciding between NHS or private cataract surgery, there are a number of key factors to consider.

Vision Correction

The NHS will safely remove cataracts and provide a standard monofocal lens implant. However, the NHS does not offer refractive cataract surgery. The only lens implants available to the NHS (in most cases) are monofocal (or single focal). This often results in patients’ cataracts being removed, but they would still be required to wear glasses after the procedure.

Refractive cataract surgery offered at LaserVision in comparison, offers an extensive selection of different types of lens to help ensure that your dependence on glasses or contact lenses is reduced. At LaserVision, we specialise in both cataract surgery, and laser cataract surgery, giving you a multitude of options to remove your cataracts and restore your eyesight.

Waiting Lists

One of the distinct differences between NHS and private cataract surgery is the difference in waiting times. Unfortunately, due to COVID-19 (coronavirus) and the local and national lockdowns, the NHS waiting times are much longer than usual.

Private treatment does not have the same long waiting time and surgery can be performed within a few weeks. You can book a consultation at one of our clinics at a time and date that that suits you.

Aftercare

Private procedures allow more time for your consultation. This gives your consultant the opportunity to discuss the procedure and answer any questions you may have. Follow-up clinks also have more time to offer appropriate aftercare. Additionally, you will receive regular check-ups throughout your recovery process and have access to your consultant should you have any questions or concerns following surgery.
